I'm your host, Michael Palmer, and today's show is going to be wonderful. Our guest is a retention and workforce productivity expert who is also the director of HR practice and head people officer at Business Sherpa Group, Inc. Dr. Sue Haywood, welcome to the show. Hi, Michael. Thanks so much for having me. It's great to have you. And I am looking forward to this conversation as anything to do with humans in this day and age is very important conversation. But before we get into that, Sue, please tell us about your career journey leading up to this point.
So I've had a really diverse and non-traditional career. And as much as I am incredibly grateful for all of the experiences that I've been fortunate enough to have, I'm not sure I'd advise anyone to follow in my footsteps. I started out as a young undergraduate not really knowing what to do with my life. I was fortunate enough to have attended school at Dalhousie University in Halifax on the East Coast and didn't know what I wanted to do. Thankfully, the Navy was sitting right in front of me. So, I actually joined the Canadian Armed Forces and that was the most brilliant decision from a leadership an organizational behavior perspective. I learned an enormous amount of my time there. And that's what led me to a career in HR. And again, through opportunities that presented themselves and a lot of perseverance, I was able to ascend to senior HR ranks and worked incredible experiences, a lot of work success, and suddenly realized actually while I was backpacking through Kenya that What have I done with my life and why am I spending so much time working?
