How Body Language Can Help You Build Trust and Win Clients

Understanding body language isn’t just for FBI agents or public speakers. In an interview with The Successful Bookkeeper podcast, communication expert Mark Bowden shared why learning a few simple body language techniques can help bookkeepers gain trust, build stronger relationships, and win more clients.

Here’s what you can start doing right away.

Think “Warmth” Over Words

Most people put all their energy into what they say when meeting someone new. But Mark argues that how you show up—with your body—is just as important. When you walk into a room, your body language tells a story before you speak.

A simple shift: imagine stepping into a warm room after being out in the cold. You naturally open up, drop your shoulders, lift your hands, and relax your posture. That’s what “open” body language looks like—and it signals that you’re approachable and trustworthy.

When people see that in you, they often mirror it. You’ll notice them relax, open up, and engage with you more easily.

Start Conversations the Right Way

Instead of leading with your pitch or trying to prove your value, start with curiosity. Ask people questions like:

  • “What’s been going well in your business lately?”
  • “What challenges are you working through right now?”

These questions spark meaningful conversation and give you insight into how you might help. The key is to listen more than you speak. Let them open up before you offer advice or solutions.

Apply This in Networking and Presentations

Whether you’re attending a local networking event or giving a short talk about your services, keep the focus on trust and connection.

Don’t obsess over perfect wording. Instead, use open body language, stay relaxed, and invite conversation. People might not remember every detail of what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel. That feeling of trust is what opens the door to future opportunities.

Practice It Right Away

Try this in your next client meeting or networking event:

  • Stand tall with relaxed shoulders.
  • Bring your hands up to waist level with open palms.
  • Smile naturally and make eye contact.
  • Ask open-ended questions and genuinely listen.

You don’t need a script. You just need to show up as someone people feel good talking to.

This approach won’t just help you land more clients—it can improve how you collaborate with staff, present ideas, and handle tough conversations.

Start small. Stay consistent. Watch how people respond.
