Every job still needs a bookkeeper | The Weekly Close

Written by Michael Palmer | Oct 28, 2026, 6:46:33 PM

The Weekly Close is the Successful Bookkeeper's weekly note. This is issue 4, from Thursday 29 October 2026.

In this issue: why louder tools don't change your place, this week's episode with Dickson Wasake, CPA, Intuit's AI push, Karbon's tech report, Inkle buying a bookkeeping division, and TSB Live with Michael on your ideal client and niche. About three minutes.

From Michael

Every job needs a bookkeeper. That isn't my line. It comes from Dickson Wasake, a CPA who worked at PwC, Baker Tilly and Deloitte and now runs his own firm. He told me: "There is no job I do without needing a bookkeeper."

Now put that next to the other news this week. At Intuit Connect on 27 October, Intuit gave its big stage to AI and automation, and said its tools cut accountants' manual work by about 30%. The tools get louder every October. If that's the only half you hear, it's easy to start wondering where you fit.

Here's the other half. The tools change the work. They don't remove the need for someone who makes sure the numbers are right and can explain them. Software can match a transaction. It can't sit down with an owner and tell them what their numbers mean for next month. Dickson's point is that reconciled isn't the same as decision ready, and that gap is where we earn our place. And it came from a CPA with more than 20 years at big firms, not from someone selling software.

So be confident in this profession. Part of that confidence is getting known for what you know: the clients you serve best and the work you do better than anyone else. That's the topic of the first TSB Live with Michael, Thursday 29 October at 4pm ET: your ideal client and your niche, and then your questions. It runs every month, free with registration.

In the industry

Intuit puts AI across QuickBooks and its accountant tools

At Intuit Connect on 27 October, Intuit introduced Intuit Intelligence across QuickBooks and the tools it builds for accountants. The company says this automation cuts accountants' manual work by about 30%.

What it means for you: Treat the 30% as Intuit's own figure, and if you do get hours back, decide now whether they go to advisory work or to taking on more clients.

Karbon says tech-forward firms earn more per person

Karbon's State of Technology in Accounting 2027 report compares firms that adopt technology early with more cautious ones. It finds the tech-forward firms bring in 28% more revenue per employee.

What it means for you: Before you add a tool, write down which hours it should free up and what you'll charge for that time, because revenue per person is what the report measures.

Inkle buys Finally's bookkeeping division

Inkle has bought Finally's bookkeeping division, which grows its accounting work for US small businesses. Inkle's model is to give the software away and charge for the bookkeeping service.

What it means for you: When a company buying bookkeeping work gives the software away and charges for the service, it shows where the value is, so price your work as a service and not as access to software.

Try this week

Take 20 minutes and list three things you did for clients this month that no software flagged by itself: a question you asked, a mistake you caught, a pattern you explained. Keep the list. It's your plain answer the next time a client or prospect asks why they need you now that QuickBooks has AI.

One question

When a client asks why they still need you now that their software has AI, what do you tell them? Subscribers can reply to any issue of The Weekly Close, and the best answers run in the next one.

P.S. Would an internationally recognised UK qualification be valuable to you? I mean the IAB's LCCI qualifications, short ones you stack up over time rather than one long course. Subscribers can reply to this issue with yes, no or maybe.
